Day 39-40 - Bryce Canyon

After an amazing first day in Bryce Canyon, we couldn't wait to spend two more days here.

But since we knew we had two more days here, we decided to take it easy today.  We had a lazy morning with breakfast and Bailey's and coffee.  Once we were feeling motivated, we drove to a short hike to Mossy Cave.  In the winter and spring, the cave is perpetually wet and dripping with water.  However, since it was deep into the summer, the cave was fairly dry.  But the hike was unique and we were close to a river the whole time!  The river was an unusual caramel color and had an impressive waterfall.

We made it back to camp just in time for a huge thunderstorm.  We took shelter in the tent, with the cribbage board and a few beers, and waited out the storm.

Later in the afternoon, we took a drive and took in some more of the scenic viewpoints.

Taking it all in

We ended the day with pizza (believe it or not), beer (yes, we did drink alcohol with every meal today) and a fire.

The next day, we decided to be a little more adventurous.  Since we enjoyed the Queen's Garden hike from the first day so much, we decided to do that again but take the Peek-A-Boo loop back up to the top which extends the hike by a few miles.

However, when we reached the point where we were supposed to hike up and out, we were surprised to find this:

The trail was closed due to rock slides so we had to turn back around and go back the way we came.  It added a few extra miles to the hike but we were okay with that.  We even got to see a rattlesnake (at least we think it was a rattler).

We were pretty exhausted by the end of the hike so headed back to camp to rest.  I took the opportunity to get some work done.

Then the afternoon thunderstorms started.  We thought this would be a great time to get a shower in (apparently everyone else at the park thought the same thing!)  We each waited in our respective lines and silently cursed everyone and everything about the situation.  Once we finally emerged, clean and somewhat relaxed, it was still pouring rain and we got almost as wet running to the car as we got in our showers.

We had been looking forward to taking a moonlight walk because of the full moon and were really hoping that the clouds would clear up before dark.  Unfortunately, the clouds never really went away but we still went for a walk anyway and got occasional glimpses of the bright moon.  We would only imagine how incredible it would have been to walk along the canyon rim on a clear night.  Something to look forward to for next time!

We called it a night and mentally prepared to leave Bryce Canyon in the morning.
