Days 53-55 Bigfork to Glacier

After a fun and relaxing few days of stationary living we packed up the Subaru once again and hit the road, this time, northbound to Bigfork Campground at Flathead Lake.

Flathead lake is an excellent weekend destination in it's own right but we were particularly interested in staying there because of it's proximity to Glacier National Park. As we had done successfully a couple of times already on Trip America we'd stay as close to the regional star as possible, stock up on supplies, and arrive first thing the following day to snag one of the first-come first-served campsites.

Once we secured a campsite at Bigfork and took care of some pre-Glacier preparations we explored the quaint town a bit. There was an open-air concert in town that night so we picked up a bottle of vino verde, some snacks, and enjoyed the musical styling of Andre Floyd, Montana's original Blues artist!

After the concert it was back to the campground for some rest before our big day in Glacier National Park.

Day 54

There were few things on the trip that I was looking forward to with as much enthusiasm as Glacier National Park. Not only did Glacier promise to be beautiful, it also represented my last good chance to see a bear on the trip. As I've probably mentioned earlier, Lauren was less excited than I was about seeing a bear up close and personal (especially in a park that bragged it had the largest grizzly population in the lower 48)

Full of excitement we arrived at the park early and found a great spot at Sprague Creek campground. After we set camp we hopped in the car and headed straight for the parks most famous drive, the Going to Sun Road! The Going to the Sun Road is an amazing engenering feat, and I don't think I have the words to describe it's beauty... so I'll use photos instead :)

Going up...

and still climbing...
What a trooper!
Beautiful!

If only there was a place to park... :(

Vast, beautiful views.. narrow, curvy roads!

Selfie!
oh hello Mr. Goat!
After a wonderful drive and a frenzy of photography we stopped by a visitors center to pick up maps and suggestions on how to spend the rest of our time in the park. From there it was back to the campground for a light hike, and a pasta dinner.

Day 55

The next day was going to be our last full day in the park and we couldn't resist the urge to again drive up the Going to the Sun Road in the morning.

The views were equally striking the second time around.
Looking upstream at the melting glaciers
And downstream...
After our second summit of the Going to the Sun road we did a mild hike to a series of waterfalls (Lauren's favorite).

Squirrelly loves waterfalls almost as much as Lauren does!
Perfect water for dippin' your toes in!
Another successful Trip America day in the books!
