Day 29 – Newport Calfornia! (July 11th)

Doug and Katy headed off early to their big-kid jobs. Lauren and I woke up late and headed to the beach.

We stopped for a delicious breakfast at Ruby's Shake Shake (thanks for the recommendation Katy!)

Breakfast burritos are even more delicious with the Pacific Ocean in front of you.
Soon after we found a parking spot in Laguna. We poked in some of the art shops, admiring the work of local artists. I liked a couple of the pieces a lot but didn't buy anything because we didn't have much extra room in the car (well, that was one of the reasons I didn't buy anything, the other reason I didn't buy anything was that most of the price tags had 3-4 zero's behind the lead number.

SoCal tends to get a lot of days in June (June-gloom) but by mid-July you can expect consistent sun. The locals were probably surprised by the cooler temps and cloudy skies that day but Lauren and I wouldn't be deterred. We tossed on our suits and got tossed around by some waves. We were actually really surprised by how big the waves were. We waded out past our wastes and when the first big wave hit us it knocked us both under giving us each our weekly dose of sodium. We recovered and tried again to hold our own against the tide and again we were tossed on our asses by the incoming wave.

After we'd had our fill of waves and sun we made our way back to Doug and Katy's place to clean up and relax a bit. Doug had arranged for us to take their family's Duffy (electronic harbor boat) out for the evening and we wanted to be rested up!

The Duffy was everything I had hoped for and more. Doug, Katy, Ina, John, Lauren and I putted around Newport bay in style with a delicious spread of meats, cheeses, and a wonderful dessert of mason jar cheese cake (put that shit on Pinterest Ina!)

The Duffy!
Although it had been cloudy all day clouds cleared out just in time for sunset! Before calling it a night we stopped (docked) at Woody's Wharf for a Fireball shot (yes, a Fireball shot) and then headed back for the evening.

Captain Doug's very "unusual" docking method...

 What an amazing night!

  2. I think I will have to teach Doug some sailing knots so that he can tie up hi boat properly...

    1. I'm just glad that they had Hefty brand trash bags. If they had purchased the bargain brand, I'm not sure it would have held!
